My Practice

I spent over twenty five years in academic practice, the last fifteen as Chief of Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery at New York University in New York City. In 2011, I reached the pinnacle of academic practice by becoming a full professor of both orthopedic surgery and pediatrics. I had accomplished a great deal. I had treated thousands of patients with varying orthopedic problems, had contributed to research and published scores of articles and book chapters. I also helped train nearly two hundred and fifty residents and over 20 fellows.

What was missing was my ability to truly and globally make a difference for the specific conditions that I treated. I was making headway but I needed a true center of excellence where I had the support, technology and combined care of practitioners, such as physical and occupational therapists, working together to treat the difficult disorders that I specialized in.

So, in October of 2015 I joined Paley Institute and Palm Beach Children’s Hospital in West Palm Beach Florida. In the past two and a half years I have been able to make incredible in-roads in altering the way we treat Scoliosis, Hip Dysplasia, limb deformity and arthrogryposis, to name a few. An example of this has been in my care of children and adults with Arthrogryposis, a stiff jointed disease. In 2007, I was an author on an article that concluded one needed to use a large external device to straighten the stiff knees of these patients. We stated that we had good results but that the device was quite painful and while the patients developed straight knees, the knee motion did not improve. Since arriving at Paley Institute, I have developed a new method of straightening these patient’s knees with no painful device and a result that allows for much more painless motion of the knee. Arthrogryposis is not the only condition that I have been able to change for the better. Scoliosis with non-surgical management and non-fusion surgery is seeing a revolution in care. Treating hip pain in adults with biologic injections and at times surgery to avoid early hip replacement is another. Lengthening and straightening limbs safely and effectively, often minimally invasively and most often avoiding amputation, is becoming the standard of care. So many norms are changing.

Working in a center that fosters innovation and creativity combined with state of the art technology, outstanding physical and occupational therapy, a caring-holistic approach to the patients and families and resources for complex surgical care, is the culmination of the work that I have done to get here. I look forward to the years ahead as I forge forward treating patients from all 50 states and over 90 countries and continuously improve and create new ways to improve the lives of my patients and all those suffering from these orthopedic conditions.
