In Memory of Dr. Harry L. Shufflebarger
It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our dear colleague and friend, Dr. Harry L. Shufflebarger, on August 11, 2025.
Dr. Shufflebarger was one of the true giants in pediatric spine surgery. Over the course of five decades, he shaped the field through groundbreaking research, innovative surgical techniques, and an unwavering commitment to doing what was best for every child in his care. He treated thousands of patients, founded the Harms Study Group, served as President of the Scoliosis Research Society, and mentored surgeons across the globe who continue to carry forward his teachings.
After nearly forty years of distinguished practice in Miami, Dr. Shufflebarger joined the Paley Orthopedic & Spine Institute in 2020. These past years with him have been an honor. His passion for his work was unmatched, he never slowed down, never stopped learning, and never stopped giving. Our team cherished his presence, his wisdom, and his quiet, steady dedication to his patients.
Outside the operating room, Harry loved traveling and spending time on the water. Whether discussing a complex surgical plan or recalling a favorite fishing trip, he carried the same curiosity, humility, and genuine kindness.
Our hearts are with his family, his friends, and the countless individuals whose lives are better because of him. His legacy lives on; in the patients he treated, the families he supported, and the generations of surgeons he guided.
As we move forward, we will remain committed to caring for Dr. Shufflebarger’s patients with the same compassion and excellence he embodied.
